UNL associate professor Raymond J Supalla reports at a 1977 seminar that in 1970 the United States consumed 88 billion gallons daily with 82.9 percent for irrigation. Projections to 2020 show irrigation still dominates growth while other uses rise modestly. Nebraska withdrawals total about six million acre feet yearly, 90 percent for irrigation, with municipal use far smaller.
