Maryland governor Mandel convicted of corruption

Pickets halt return to work in West Virginia mines
Roving pickets from Kentucky and elsewhere stopped thousands of miners from entering West Virginia mines, prolonging a nine week wildcat walkout. About half of WV's 65 000 coal miners returned, while others faced picket lines in Logan Kanawha and Boone counties as District 17 leaders voted to resume for 60 days. District 25 reported no pickets and said miners would return later.

Leigh church marks 90th anniversary observance
Leigh First United Church of Christ will observe its 90th anniversary with a 6:30 p.m. picnic at Tri-County Recreation Area shelter followed by an 8 p.m. worship and communion led by Rev. J. Arden Wild. Nebraska Conference minister Dr. David J. Jamieson will bring greetings. Organist Mrs. L. Hobel will play the church’s historic organ. The service honors the church’s long history from its 1887 incorporation and 1888 building to later remodels, with past pastors noted and the 1968 union with Stanton’s New England Congregational Church mentioned. The current membership is 92.

VFW Opposes Carter Panama Canal Treaty
The National Convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars adopted a resolution opposing President Carter's Panama Canal treaty. About 6,000 delegates stood and cheered as no one spoke against it. The resolution warned of a political timebomb and insisted U8 operation and defense of the canal are non negotiable. James E. Van Zandt urged congressmen to vote against the treaty, calling it a military defeat for the country.
