Ford urges restraint in grain shipment dispute
President Ford asked APL-CIO chief Meany and all sides to cool it in the row over shipping American grain to the Soviet Union. He met with wheat growers in Vail Cole, and officials agreed to wait for the national grain forecast due Sept 11 before any action on the maritime onion’s refusal to load grain bound for Russia. Kenneth Kendrick, a Stafford Texas grower and president of Great Plains Wheat, warned it will be another ballgame after that. Meany supported the boycott and said it would continue until the administration explained the effect on labor.
