Harris addresses rally in Lincoln
Former Oklahoma Senator Fred Harris spoke at the Lincoln Capitol Rotunda saying his Democratic presidential bid rests on two assumptions: citizens can govern themselves and power should diffuse widely. He praised campaign finance matching and warned government should help ordinary people, not the very rich. Harris, on a Washington to Nebraska camper tour, touted organization and support in 28 states, including Nebraska with its open primary, and urged turnout on issues like gasoline prices and farm policy. He also criticized agriculture secretary and grain rules, advocated Russia buy-notice reforms, and outlined plans to press neighbors in North Platte, Grand Island, Scottsbluff, Chadron.

Ford may test government recall order in court
Ford Motor Co may challenge a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall on 625,000 1968 and 1969 Mustang and Mercury Cougar vehicles. Ford argues the agency overstepped its authority, noting prior limits on recalls and owner notifications, while reporting most affected cars remain on the road with few injury or property damage claims. The company also announced a separate recall of 6,700 tandem-axle trucks for rear-axle housing failures.

Spacecraft preps push Viking toward Mars deadline
Engineers at Kennedy Space Center shifted the Viking launch to August 20 from August 24 in a bid to reach Mars ahead of the 1976 bicentennial. Two identical ships were to launch 10 days apart, with a possible July 4, 1976 landing if timing allowed, else a Mars lander before November 15, 1976 to maintain Earth Mars contact. A valve fault and battery drain halted the first launch, prompting swapping to the sister ship to buy time for fixes.
