Monroe and Platte County History and the Seed Industry

Monroe County once served as a county seat akin to Columbus and later merged with Platte County after land reductions. The town relocated to the railroad siding in 1889 and became Monroe, with Gerrard Homestead deeds banning liquor. The town built a local press, The Looking Glass, followed by The Republican, Monroe News, and The Booster. The Booster, under Dan Ziegler from 1942, featured sharp editorials and humor. Monroe’s cucumber seed industry emerged around 1695, expanding to seed corn and squash seed by 1905, and earning $38,000 in sales before processing costs and higher grain prices shifted profits.
