Washington reports a 7.8 percent unemployment rate for July, up from June and the year’s high. Some 7.4 million people were jobless, with women bearing the larger share of the increase as summer hiring waned and youths entered the labor market.
The forecast calls for a pleasant weekend with daytime temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s and 50s to 60s at night. Severe storms caused hail damage west of Cambridge near Curtis, with just over half an inch of rain at Curtis and Wilsonville as the system weakened.
Mr and Mrs Greeley Rickert learn their daughter Cathy, who stayed at an Estes Park camp above Thompson Creek, is safe after earlier missing reports. The camp area near Drake Colo was destroyed by the flood. The Rowes head to salvage their 15 year old cabin not insured for flood.
The Senate rejected a proposed 70 percent maximum capital gains exemption by 43 to 39 as part of a broad tax reform package. The measure would have phased in the exemption based on holding period and faced criticism from Sen. Kennedy who called it a rare reform victory for his group. The bill also liberalizes gift and estate taxes and adds college tuition credits and Olympic athlete tax provisions while projecting a revenue loss of over 11 billion through 1981. Weather notes report 112 degrees in Gila Bend Arizona and lows around 38 in several cities.
In Harrisburg and Atlanta doctors insist the cause of the mysterious illness remains unknown. CDC officials say toxins or viruses are possible but tests show no viral involvement. Two new deaths raise tolls while investigators seek a common link to the American Legion convention in Sophia and look for environmental or lab clues.
Harvey Hajek 40 of Linwood died when his crop-spraying airplane crashed and burst into flames in a field at the southwest edge of Abie Nebraska. Authorities reported the engine stalled during a turn as the probable cause.
Vice President Nelson Rockefeller weighs Connally as a campaigner against Carter. Reagan and Schweiker win New Jersey and New York delegates as Ford leads with 1,120 of 1,130 needed. Carter defends himself from Watergate linkage while Connally faces scrutiny from Jaworski. Ford nomination decision expected soon.
Lincoln Nebraska union by UPI reports the Nebraska Tax Research Council finds one government employee per 12.5 residents in 1975 up from 13.5 in 1973. statewide totals show 123642 workers with earnings rising from 1965 to last year. local and state payrolls grew significantly.
