Columbus council closed a two hour session with no dissenting votes. Mayor George Johansen noted unanimous decisions as routine business dominated the agenda and major actions were taken, including a move on additional thoroughfares.
Jim Estrand will chair the October 8 rally at Columbus Senior High Auditorium with a noted guest speaker and music program. Bob Law says Estrand is a respected local leader. the event is part of Discover Columbus Days and aims to unite area residents.
The Columbus United Way launches advance drives this week contacting firms with large local employment and out-of-area home offices to allow extra preparation time. Official campaign opening to be announced later. The drive includes a loan executive program with listed employers like Loup Public Power District and General Telephone Company. A 6,041 acre wildfire on Mount Diablo slopes near San Francisco was contained at midnight with control expected by 6 p.m. The blaze forced evacuations of several luxury ranch homes but damaged no structures. The Nebraska Highway Commission and Nebraska Department of Roads will hold a public hearing in Columbus on Aug. 16 to review two U.S. 41 improvement segments south of the city. Plans include new bridges over the Platte River Barnum Creek and the Loup River, with additional right of way. The session starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn.
Syrian President Hafez Assad voiced support for Cyrus Vance's Middle East peace efforts after a two hour meeting. Heavy rains drenched southeast Nebraska and scattered showers and thundershowers are expected statewide through Friday.
