Advance United Way drive begins in Columbus area

The Columbus United Way launches advance drives this week contacting firms with large local employment and out-of-area home offices to allow extra preparation time. Diablo fire contained amid shifts to other Northern California blazes

A 6,041 acre wildfire on Mount Diablo slopes near San Francisco was contained at midnight with control expected by 6 p.m. The blaze forced evacuations of several luxury ranch homes but damaged no structures. Firefighters planned to reallocate crews to hundreds of other lightning fires across drought-stricken Northern California.

Public hearing on U.S. 41 road upgrades in Columbus

The Nebraska Highway Commission and Nebraska Department of Roads will hold a public hearing in Columbus on Aug. 16 to review two U.S. 41 improvement segments south of the city. Plans include new bridges over the Platte River Barnum Creek and the Loup River, with additional right of way. The session starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn.

Rainy Nebraska Outlook Applies Through Friday

Heavy rains drenched southeast Nebraska and scattered showers and thundershowers are expected statewide through Friday. Flash flood warnings were issued near Hebron with five inches of rain, and the Little Neme River Basin faces flood risk. Overnight rainfall ranged up to nearly five inches with highs in the 60s to 90s across the state and frequent showers tonight.

Immunization Policy for Platte County Kinderparten Enrollees

Platte County Schools require measles rubella diphtheria pertussis and tetanus immunizations for all children under 12 enrolling this fall. Public Law 744.01 supports the rule with a 60 day verification window for transfers, and noncompliant students may be excluded until compliant.
