Nebraska sheriff can keep boarding allowance says attorney general

The Nebraska Attorney General ruled that sheriffs in counties with populations under 200000 may retain the unused portion of prisoners boarding allowances as an emolument. The 1943 statute allows this except in Douglas County where meals are charged at actual cost. The opinion notes legislative action has not changed this interpretation. It also recalls the Guilford Courthouse battle where British General Cornwallis defeated Nathanael Greene.

Nebraska corn crop gets aid from spotty rainfall

A weekly crop report from the Nebraska Crop and Livestock Reporting Service notes irrigated corn mostly good with over 85 percent silked, while dryland corn remains fair and needs more rain. North central and northeast areas show poorest dryland conditions with rootworms and local hail damage cited amid improving topsoil moisture. Sorghum and soybeans are largely good, with sorghum headed 50 percent and soybeans about 40 percent padded. Alfalfa and wild hay remain fair to good as second cutting nears completion and slow regrowth may follow dry conditions.
