Lightning Sweeps Northern California Fires Across Region

A night storm sparked dozens of brush and timber fires across Northern California including a 3,000 acre blaze on Mt. Diablo forcing about 50 families to evacuate. Smaller blazes burned in redwood stands along the North Coast and near Monterey Hig Sur area as forecasters warned of more storms. Residents reported intense lightning and crowds formed near Clayton markets as police intervened. Firefighters battled scattered blazes in Sonoma, Mendocino and Humboldt counties, with the Spanish Flat fire described as burning in rugged terrain.

Swim-Along to Aid Platte County Cancer Unit

Nearly 25 youths have signed up for a Swim-Along next Monday at Pawnee Park pool to raise funds for the Platte County unit of the American Cancer Society Nebraska Division. Participants will secure sponsors based on swim duration. contact pool manager Bob Hopp to join. The event starts at 9 a.m. and proceeds benefit cancer work locally.

Osceola Man Dies in Polk County Crash

A two car collision Monday near Shelby in Polk County killed rural Osceola resident William J. Thelen, 22. Eugene Reisdorff of Shelby suffered head and chest injuries and was hospitalized. The wreck happened one mile west and one mile north of Shelby. the sheriff’s office investigates.

Traffic deaths rise in area with July total of thirteen

Sgt Don Morris of the Highway Patrol reports thirteen traffic deaths in the Troop H area for July, up from five in the previous July. The deaths occurred in Platte County five, Nance and Thurber two each, and Cedar Burt Wheeler and Coming one each. Year to date Platte County highway deaths total twelve, up from two last year.

Skies were mostly sunny in Nebraska with 70s to 80s temperatures and showers in parts. An Alberta Montana disturbance will dominate tonight and Wednesday with scattered thundershowers and highs in the 60s to lower 80s, while very high fire danger persists in the Panhandle and southwest.

Lincoln teen to appeal second degree murder conviction

Ricky A. Johnson, 17, of York, will appeal his second degree murder conviction. He was found guilty June 29 of shooting York policeman James M. Richardson I during a disturbance call at the Johnson home. Johnson received a 20 year sentence at hard labor after a jury convicted him of the lesser charge. A motion for a new trial was denied July 21.

Petition drives push for statewide school aid vote in 6,652 names

Nebraska supporters led by State Sen. Bernice Labedz deposit 6,652 signatures seeking a statewide vote on a 20 million annual school aid increase for three years. They aim for 50,000 by Aug. 10 with the Aug. 30 referendum deadline looming.

Aliens to be deported from Polk County area

Seven aliens illegally in the country were turned over to the Omaha immigration office for deportation. They had worked on construction of grain elevators in Polk and Stromsburg and came from the Juarez area of Mexico. One involved in a hit and run crash near St Mowacd. no injuries reported.

Columbus City Council to debate sidewalk district and alley actions

Columbus City Council convenes at 4 p.m. Wednesday in City Hall to consider ordinances including creation of a sidewalk district and the vacating or sale of multiple alleys outlets and a section of 34th Avenue. A letter from County Attorney Doug Milbourn discusses tax nonpayment proceedings. In other news, Las Vegas saw a high of 112 degrees and Gunnison, Colorado, a low of 35.

Columbus July rainfall and heat exceed normal trends

Columbus saw July rainfall of 3.28 inches, slightly below the normal 4.07, lifting year to date moisture to 21.26 inches, 4.60 inches above the seasonal standard. Average highs reached 90.6 degrees with a mean of 80.2, about 2.4 degrees above normal, while lows averaged 69.8. Top reading was 100 degrees at the Loup Power District station, with cooler 55 degrees observed on a local lot.
