Eugene Kush dies in Omaha funeral rites here Monday

Eugene J Kush, 40, a former Columbus resident, died this morning in St Joseph Hospital Omaha after a six month illness. He worked at Behlen Mfg Co and then General Appliance in Omaha. Funeral a.m. Monday at St Anthony Catholic Church with Rev Armand Lubanski. burial in Bonaventure Cemetery. Rosary Sunday 7:30 p.m. at McKown Funeral Chapel. in state after 4 p.m. Sunday. He was born June 16, 1890 in Columbus. married Kathryn Snyder in 1930. four children Michael Sharon Debra Darnell live in Omaha. second wife Pearl Behrens has Caroline and Laurie in Columbus. Survived by brother Lawrence. preceded by Tom and Dean.

4 H trophies awarded at Polk County Fair

Trophies were distributed in the 4 H Division with grand and reserve champions named across homemaking agriculture and showmanship. Winners include Susan Herrmann II Rachel Boden in Dress revue, Nancy McDonald and Margie ANN in Foods, Bonnie McGimpsey and Kimberly Boden in Home Living, Susan Klerrmann and Anne Lux in Clothing, and multiple names in livestock and animal husbandry categories. State fair winners were noted in the song contest with Country Cousins led by Sisar Herrmann and Blue River Beaverettes with April Walgren. Ren Krieg led ceremonies with Mrs Lux chairing and narrators aiding.

Outer Space Picnic Brings 50 To City club meeting

The City Modern Woodmen Junior Service Club held an Outer Space Picnic at the city park this week. President Peg Dehner led a 50-member gathering with guests Bonnie Helman Jeanie Hilger and Denise Rush. Gene Coufal awarded Dehner an engraved plaque for an honorable mention in the 17d Outstanding Junior Contests. Members were urged to bring garden flowers to the director’s home for donation to shut-ins and hospital patients, and an arrangement was taken to the Gray Nursing Home.

Hruska urges education reform to curb campus unrest

Sen. Roman L. Hruska spoke at Wayne State College urging reduced permissiveness and a return to traditional education goals. He blamed campus violence on radicals and criticized administrators for misprioritizing social change, stressing rights of students and duties of educators. Polk County Fair Ends at Osceola Site

Osceola hosts five day Polk County Fair with large crowds daily. Fair board members and numerous superintendents across 11 divisions backed the event, including Henry Galus as president and Ray Conrad as secretary and manager. Extension staff led by Ken Krieg supported the fair, with many volunteers listed.

Drive-in sold in David City

David City’s Western Drive-In, run by the Mel Janicek family for five years, has been sold to Gary Niemann. The new owner assumed control Saturday. Janicek becomes a field supervisor for Insurance Company of North America and the family will remain residents of David City. Weber Auto Parts moves to a new site in the former David City Hatchery at 537 1 Street.

Services set Monday for retired farmer Joseph L. Kavan

Funeral services are arranged for Monday at Svoboda Funeral Home in Schuyler for Joseph L. Kavan 71 a retired area farmer who died Friday at Bryant Regional Hospital Lincoln after a lengthy illness Rev Carleton Stuart will officiate at 10 am with burial in Schuyler Cemetery He was born December 16 1890 in Saunders County near Morse Bluffs to John and Ann Volpalensky Kavan and married Tillie Mach March 23 1920 in Wahoo The couple farmed near Morse Bluffs before retiring to Schuyler four years ago Survivors include his wife five sons Jose George Richard Rueben of Morse Nlufts Lester of Des Moines four daughters Helen Seitles Scribner Maxine Kratky Prague Jo Ann Schuyler Marcie Shestak Lincoln 22 grandchildren and one great grandchild a brother Albin Morse Bluffs and three sisters Millie Kouma Linwood Anna Kubik Prague Agnes Prochaska Prague He was preceded in death by his parents three brothers and a sister.

Ex David Cillan earns promotion to foreman at LT&T

Philip Le Bohl, a former David City resident, has been advanced to equipment foreman with Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph in Lincoln. He joined LT&T in 1959 as a switchman in Crete, then served as an installer repairman in David City from 1964 to 1967 before moving to Lincoln.

Live firing practice for Guard members at Fort Carson

The 67th Infantry Brigade of the Nebraska Army National Guard conducted intensive field training at Fort Carson Colorado. First Battalion 34th Infantry Mechanized moved to firing ranges to test 4.2 inch howitzer accuracy using high explosive rounds.
