CHS festival of arts set for May week of events

Columbus High hosts a five day festival May 3 to 7 featuring a pops concert, Dixie Cups guest group, Girls Glee concerts, student art displays with a student written play Visit to the Planet of the Dumb Animals, mini concerts by CHS groups, skits and a matinee of The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. Admission 50 cents for the final play.

Jane Tooley Becomes Nebraska State Patrol's First Woman

Jane Tooley, daughter of Mrs. Frances Tooley of Columbus, was sworn in as the first woman trooper in Nebraska State Patrol. She joined 92 officers as Attorney General Paul Douglas administered the oath in Lincoln with Gov. Exon attending. The ceremony began training for 32 troopers, a seven week academic course followed by six months of in service instruction and two weeks more at Lincoln Air Park. Solo patrol duties expected by November 1.

Death claims 12-year-old hospital jokester in Detroit

Regis Prograss, a ward comedian at Children's Hospital in Detroit, died of leukemia at 12. He entertained patients and ambulance crews for five years, often joking between hospital stays and ambulance trips. His mother recalled his cheerful, untroubled acceptance of death.

NPPD to sue OPPD over Ft Calhoun 2 project

The Nebraska Public Power District board voted to sue Omaha Public Power District to recover funds paid toward the now defunct Ft. Calhoun No 2 nuclear plant. Board president Robert Peterson said the action protects ratepayers and does not rule out settlements. OPPD chair Rosemary Skorupa said a courtroom fight is unlikely and that they may end up as good friends. OPPD had pulled out of the partnership, risking losses, while NPPD hired Marvin Schmhid to pursue the case.

Lincoln approves bill to raise gas tax for roads

Lincoln Nebraska lawmakers gave preliminary approval to LB138 proposing a penny rise in the 8.5 cent state gas tax to raise about 10 million dollars annually for state and local road maintenance. A companion LB236 to shift light traffic roads off the state system faced delays as the session adjourned.

Platte Emerald royalty crowned at Emerald Ball

Rocky Plettner and Kathy Klug of Columbus were crowned Emerald King and Queen at Platte College's Emerald Ball held at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Elijah Filey Stone Barn Named National Register Site

The Nebraska State Historical Society announced the Elijah Filey Stone Barn near Filley in Gage County has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1874 of limestone, the barn is described as one of the most magnificent in the state and the largest limestone structure presently known.
