Omaha Growth Fueled by Vigorous Annexation Policy
Omaha planning director Alden Rust credits the citys population rise in the mid 1970s to an aggressive annexation program. Census figures show Omaha 1975 population at 371 455 up from 358 452 in 1970, lifting rank from 42nd to 35th among US cities. He argues annexation preserved growth and tax base while other cities lost residents.
