Communists seize three positions near Phnom Penh
UPI reports Cambodian government forces abandoned three positions near Phnom Penh under heavy attack and received helicopter reinforcements to shore up the besieged capital. Prime Minister Long Boret warned of a bloodbath if U S aid were cut off, saying civilian suffering would intensify while the communists enjoyed continued support. Plane carrying war orphans crashes near Saigon
A U S Air Force C5A Galaxy on Operation Babylift crashed while attempting an emergency landing near Tan Son Nhut, killing at least 178 of 205 aboard. The aircraft carried 243 orphans and 44 U.S. escorts, with 100 children and 15 to 20 adults surviving. The crash site was near Saigon River, near Vietnamese Communist-rebel areas, after a cargo door blew out at 31,000 feet.
