Columbus Sees Heavy March Rainfall Breaks Records

Columbus received 2.88 inches of rain in March the most in any month since last April’s 3.29. The month’s moisture exceeded the March normal of 1.31, with above normal temperatures: average high 53.2, low 32.6, mean 42.9. Snow was light at 1 inch versus 6.4 normal. record highs reached 78 on the 8th and lows fell to 10 on the first.

Weather advisory warns cold Western Nebraska with rain and snow

A low pressure system from Colorado heads toward Nebraska bringing cloudy skies and precipitation. The National Weather Service issues a stockman advisory for western Nebraska with rain in the east and snow in the west, and strong winds. Temperatures drop to the 20s in the west and 30s in the east overnight.

Freak Accident Destroys Cars On Highway 30

A Thursday afternoon crash near Schuyler involved an eastbound semi driven by Chris Zimmerman from Stromsburg losing a trailer that hit four cars at a used car lot owned by Don Uphoff. Two cars were totaled and two sustained $200 each. A dolly tore loose causing $200 damage, breaking five windows. Trailer damage estimated over $200. No injuries. A separate 7:30 a.m. collision at 8th and Banner Streets damaged two vehicles totaling $1,100 with Mrs Jira hospitalized.

Jobless rate back at 7.3 percent in March

Washington reports unemployment fell to 7.3 percent in March, driven by recalls after winter layoffs. Total employment rose to 89.5 million, with 7.1 million unemployed and a 0.2 point drop from January.

Senate approves ethics code with earnings limits and disclosures

The Senate voted 86 to 9 to adopt a sweeping ethics code requiring disclosure of personal income and curtailing outside earnings. Support from President Carter and leaders of both parties backed the measure, similar to the House code. The body also defeated a sunset proposal 63 to 31, despite broad backing for the code.

Motorcyclist Dies In Columbus Collision On March 13

A motorcyclist and a passenger were injured in a crash at 23rd Street and 33rd Avenue in Columbus. Gary Wedgewood of Selix Iowa died later, and Michael D Morain of Amarillo Texas was the rider. Susan Flom of Newcastle drove the other vehicle. Both injured were taken to an Omaha hospital. Police report note the March 13 incident follows a prior fatal crash in April 1974 nearby.

Panel questions Dutch journalist on Kennedy conspiracy claims

The House committee questioned Willem Oltmans over his assertion that Lee Harvey Oswald conspired with anti Castro Cubans and Texas oilmen to kill John F Kennedy. Oltmans cited George De Mohrenschildt as a conspirator who later killed himself in Palm Beach Florida.
