Dry air moves into Nebraska from the Pacific, bringing sunny skies and mild afternoon readings in the 60s to 70s. A southeast Wyoming cold front pushes into northwest Nebraska tonight, with increasing clouds and cooler temperatures expected Friday across the state.
Strikes cripple the nation as truck drivers mechanics and city workers walk out nationwide. In New York City a last minute deal spared a transit strike while the Teamsters mobilized 380 locals including over the road drivers and milk wagon crews.
Loup Power District sent crews of 13 employees and five vehicles to assist Nebraska Public Power District in repairing storm damage and restoring electricity to residents affected by the recent storm.
Pleasant temperatures and ample moisture marked March in Columbus with a high of 77 on the 25th and lows near 4 on the 6th. The month totaled 9.5 inches of snow and 2.84 inches of precipitation, more than double normal, aiding a dry start but sparing the city from widespread power outages seen in Nebraska.
St Edward and Ewing FFA chapters were named the top two in Nebraska for promoting farm safety at the 48th state convention in Lincoln. Grand National Chairman Clarence Arment announced the 1976 event will run November 4 5 and 6 in Columbus the first time in the city. Dr Bruce Cowgill will chair conservation teams with Jim Ernst as hunt chairman and Larry Meyer assisting as guide coordinator.
The Army announced plans to close eight bases and cut civilian and military jobs at 20 others to save 42 million annually. Secretary Martin Hoffman said 17,759 positions would be affected, including 3,600 civilian jobs eliminated, continuing Pentagon reductions after the Air Force and Navy earlier trimmed posts.
Lincoln Neb Governor J J Exon said he would veto the one cent per gallon increase in the state gasoline tax approved by the unicameral Legislature The vote to raise the tax from 8 5 to 9 5 cents per gallon stood 26 17 The measure now faces a possible veto override requiring 30 votes
The Labor Department shows wholesale prices up 0.2 percent in March reversing two months of decline while farm prices fall 1 percent. Industrial commodities rise 0.4 percent and processed foods up 0.2 percent. Prices are 5.5 percent higher than a year earlier.
Two men from Columbus and Silver Creek were arrested by the Platte County Sheriff’s Department in the auto theft case involving a March 13 theft from Columbus Farm Equipment and the abandoned vehicle found March 21 five miles west of Monroe on the Loup Canal.

Highlights include Floridaworld Choral Festival Lakeland Florida May 12 to 16 and multiple performances across Kansas City Lakeland Orlando and Lake Buena Vista. The trip is funded by donations fundraisers and individual contributions.
The House Budget Committee divided 13 to 12 approving a 1977 budget plan that includes 6.0 billion in spending aimed at creating about 1.13 million additional jobs for the unemployed. The measure totals 413.7 billion in spending with an 50.6 billion deficit, about 8 billion more than Ford proposed. The panel also moved to add 2.2 billion to the job creation program.
