Weather minded farmers learn planting dates hinge on soil temperatures with corn at 60 degrees for germination, soybeans at 60 to maximize stand, grain sorghum at 70 for rapid emergence. Early frosty risk noted and open house announced for Eastern Nebraska Bull Test Station in Schuyler on April 3.
United States output across beef pork veal and lamb rose overall to about 47.8 billion pounds for one day in 87 with beef at 22 billion pounds up near half a million from 1970. Pork reached 14.7 billion pounds up 13 million while veal fell 68 million and lamb and mutton totaled 560 million pounds, up slightly.

State Agricultural Director Glenn Kreuscher announced the first annual Nebraska Agricultural Youth Institute will be held Aug. 14 in Lincoln. The event, in cooperation with the State Education Department the University of Nebraska and the Nebraska Center for Continuing Education, aims to promote community involvement among Nebraska youth and will award 156 scholarships for living expenses and conference fees. Delegates will be chosen for high academics and leadership.

Agriculture Department reports tighter supplies and higher market prices curb upland cotton exports for 1971-72. Values above year ago, but reserves down two years. Shipments may fall late season after early gains. total 1971-72 exports forecast just over three million bales, down about 755,000 from last year. Farmers plan 10 percent more plantings for 1972-73 to meet use and carryover needs.
