Kitzinger block remodeling advances. encampment plans for 1898 discussed. President Johnson to visit Indianapolis. Gray collects two of six hits as Louisville errs six times yet wins.
A man planting corn near Swiss City is shot at repeatedly by Bill Jones, who uses a left eye blind revolver. The farmer stays calm, notes Bill’s poor aim, and expects the shooting to stop with time as they both “lop” away from the scene.
Cour. Journal reports Greece has accepted Germanys demand for Crete autonomy and expects immediate intervention by powers to halt the war with Turkey. It notes the Sultan seeks a 15 million dollar indemnity and cites possible cabinet crises amid Greek defeats in Epirus and Turkish advances toward Domokos. The Brown state gains telephone service linking Columbus to Nashville and Bloomington to Nashville, replacing the current absence of lines or rail service.
A local notice lists Geo H Cummins as headquarters for fishing tackle and baseball goods. Various city residents are noted visiting relatives, attending a district Baptist convention, and a man was seen intoxicated on Jackson Street with his horse and buggy. The Fourth district Democratic contest favors Hon. John Overmeyer of North Vernon with ex Senator Griffith of Switzerland county as a strong contender. Overmeyer is expected to secure Jennings and Jackson counties delegates and much of Decatur, with others from Bartholomew, Jefferson, and Ripley. Hawley and Wilson S. Swengle of Columbus are reported candidates but may drop out before the convention.
E C Allison editor of our afternoon contemporary met a mishap at Kansas commencement events Sunday night. He wore pants with a hole in the pocket and while moving among attendees, Eddie reportedly lost seven dollars, an unusual sum for an editor to hold.
The Indiana State Board of Health convenes in Indianapolis with Dr. George T. MacCoy of Columbus presenting on the diphtheria outbreak. The M E Girveh Aid Society and the Ladies Aid Society of the M K church adjust meeting times due to Mrs Hill and Mrs Wilbur’s funeral.
The Womans Missionary Society of the Christian Church will convene in the church parlors this afternoon at two o'clock. The meeting features the topic For Christ and the church.
A full grown whale, fifty five feet long and weighing eighty thousand pounds with its steel car and contents, will be exhibited in Columbus on the 15th and 16th. The whale was captured two years ago near Videnze Rhode Island and a license arrangement was made by the owners’ representative with Clerk Suverkrup on Tuesday.
The week’s grants include M. Caborn at Logansport with a bicycle wheel attachment by T. W. Davis, and A. P. Dwiggins of Waynetown with a nut-lock. J. F. Gent in Indianapolis develops cereals, while H. Jones of Richmond handles fertilizer distribution and J. Kolthoff of Lafayette cistern-filter. M. Reeves of Columbus markets a belt and T. S. Smith of Charlestown a magazine hammer or tool, plus A. Stanton of Valparaiso a folding hay-rake.
The berry growers forecast one of the largest strawberry crops in southern Indiana with prices so low as to leave little profit for farmers. Peaches and apples also appear favorable, though frosts threaten. A local entertainment at the opera house drew a fair crowd, praised by the Ladies Guild and manager Holipeter for a strong showing. Reports note residents John Vorwald and J Ashley Dent visiting, Andrew Hilger improving enough to be downtown briefly, and pension adjustments for Bursell Hudson via Daugherty & Co. The G A R veterans were welcomed to Lexington with speeches from W C P Breckenridge and Governor Bradley, as officers were to be elected.
A morning encounter in which a hurried woman asked Patrolman Hoffbauer for the location of St Johns church. Hoffbauer directed her to the church spires. She retorted with a sharp quip about police and left quickly. Other brief notices list residents and travelers passing through Richmond.
