Bombardment Near Santiago De Cuba Reported by Evening Journal

An Evening Journal dispatch from Cape Haitian describes the bombardment of Santiago de Cuba by the American fleet led by the Iowa Texas Massachusetts and New Orleans. Shells battered Morro and Socapa forts, with heavy casualties for Spain and damage to a auxiliary cruiser. Also notes the death of actor Thos W. Keene in New York.

Volunteers Leave Chickamauga for Tampa in Coordinated Move

The first wave of regiments departed Chickamauga for Tampa on Wednesday led by the 2d New York under Col. KB Hardin. Also marching to Ringgold were the 1st Ohio and 157th Indiana with others following on Thursday. The 1st District of Columbia and 1st Illinois Cavalry arrived to join the push as the army nears fifty thousand with 43,000 still in camp and 1,507 per regiment target.

Convicts Escape From Leavenworth Prison

Fifteen inmates overpowered guards at United States Penitentiary Leavenworth Kansas and fled into the woods. Leader James Musgrove was shot dead after being surrounded. thirteen convicts reached the woodland, while others remained in pursuit. The escape, involving inmates from Indian Territory serving long terms for counterfeiting and highway robbery, followed an orderly convoy to the stockades.
