Reports from Washington indicate Cuban insurgents near Santiago are supplied by Captain Dorst with food weapons and ammunition while Admiral Sampson commands naval forces in the region. Spain seeks peace measures but has not formed a formal approach through Washington or Paris as Castillo pursues intervention. Renomination for James Lloyd in Missouri’s 1st district is announced.
A compilation lists Baltimore New York Philadelphia Washington Cleveland and Chicago as winners. The box scores show varied innings totals and battery pairings for each city with umpires named.
Washington reports Army Department plans concentration of large forces at Jacksonville led by Maj. Gen. Lee. Two regiments from Chickamauga shift to Florida, one Virginia and one New Jersey. Jacksonville eyed as base for Porto Rico expedition with more regiments to follow when ready.
Washington dispatch says 75000 troops will be stationed at Chickamauga as a permanent camp. Alger ordered preparation and ground leasing to expand the park for this largest U.S. camp. Troops from the second call to be organized into three corps for equipment and drill.
The battleship Oregon arrives in Key West after a 15 000 mile voyage in smooth 15 knot runs. Sailors cheer from every ship as the fleet greets the renowned warship with flag signals and band music. The crew shows a forward list from rapid coal handling but claims a flawless Pacific build enabling rapid redeployment.
From Tampa June 8 no troops have embarked and officials expect no large movement toward Cuba soon. The Spanish fleet under Admiral Cervera remains a major factor, and authorities will not risk sending transports while the flotilla remains and ships are scarce. No official timing is available, but a major departure is not anticipated in the near term.
Rt Adm Sampson arrived off Santiago on Wednesday and assumed command of the naval force there with Commodore Schley directing the division of ships from the flying squadron Fifteen warships under Sampsons control are pledged to oppose the six Spanish men of war He will likely blockade the port until troops reach the area with 15000 to 20000 men expected early next week
A Madrid dispatch quotes the Imparcial that the Cristoval Colon is the only Spanish vessel left in Santiago, detained for boiler repairs while other ships slipped out. The London Mail questions the dispatch and suggests Spanish cruisers may have escaped amid the night attack by Furor and Pluton.
Abram Brown of Ridgeville is jailed on arson charges after his house burned to collect insurance. Pettijohn, a lumber yard owner, confessed to firing the office to destroy records of the account. Brown and Pettijohn face investigations and possible charges in Indiana news from Muncie and Ridgeville.
A bitter fight rages in Dublin against Henry Teale of Cambridge City seeking a saloon license. The town, with only one prior saloon, saw that establishment destroyed by violence. Four troops from the 2d Cavalry embark from Mobile aboard the transport Stillwater with a secret sailing time and destination. London June 3. Madrid telegrams suggest Spain may suspend specie payments as the financial position worsens beyond press reports.
