A. Weslow & Co advertises a December 18 sale of handkerchiefs mufflers plush goods toys and Christmas gifts. It touts low prices from 15¢ to 1.50 on mufflers and 24¢ Japanese styles, silk and wool mufflers at 49, and silk scarves superb value. It also promotes cloaks dress goods and four combination suits cut to 9.75 from 16.50 to clear stock.
In Curiaco and New York the Cronin trial verdict prompts varied judgments. jurors spared death for Burke Coughlin O Sullivan and Kunze receive life terms Beggs acquitted while Kunze is sentenced and all eye to January 13 for further action. Public and press comment split between disappointment and cautious praise amid calls to pursue remaining conspirators.
Edward Dalton foreman for the Lake Shore railroad in Elkhart Ind died at Toledo Torrpo after falling onto an electric roof wire while repairing a skylight. Rain dampened clothing and he was fatally burned as the current pulsed through him. He was 40 and leaves a family. Coroner to hold an inquest the next day.
A gang of thieves targeting trains and depots of the Chicago and Alton road operates in Bloomington. Last week Jesse Chism a wealthy farmer lost a pocketbook with 40 in cash and notes at Union depot. Monday night Bray hill traveling from North Carolina to Iowa was robbed of a pocketbook containing 8000 in notes at the same depot. Alton officials pursue the thieves.
Ishpeming Michigan reports two Berglund brothers killed instantly during a dynamite blast inquiry. They sought to determine why a blast failed to detonate as crews removed mangled remains at the Cleveland mine. Meanwhile Emin Pasha forecasts walking by month end and Emperor William awards a crown order. The New York wire-cut efforts continue as crews remove dangerous lines citywide.
New York reports eight influenza cases all in one family with a young woman returning from Europe. Health officers note the illness resembles European strains and will quarantine all cases if the outbreak becomes epidemic. California reports heavy storm damage around San Diego with 100000 to 200000 dollars in property losses. Six California Southern bridges washed out between here and Solidad canyon. In Boston, Dr M H Richardson reports successful throat surgery on Lawrence Barrett with gland removal. In Plattsburgh, a river ice accident claims the life of Feekiel Shute's 11 year old son and his 14 year old sister who tried to help.
In dense London fog eleven people drowned in rivers and docks while others fell into cellars and excavations or were struck by vehicles. A separate report from Dresden notes 45 year old Ewin Coulter shot a man in a saloon, killing him instantly, with no motive given. A Vienna dispatch reports Kesf mal in Galicia remains prevalent with ongoing unrest.
The Ohio biennial elections amendment failed to be legally adopted as it did not receive a majority of all votes cast at the general election. The ruling establishes that constitutional changes require a majority of all votes cast. Pan-Americans Arrive in Jersey City for Welcome in New York. The Pan-American delegates reach Jersey City and are welcomed by Mayor Grant and city officials at City Hall. One Boy's Work With Shotgun Ends in Tragedy in Maryland. A 16yearold son of Henry Potts fatally wounds someone with a shotgun in Woodstock, Howard County, Maryland.
