Rev. E. Eugene Smith Elected Pastor At St. Paul Church
The St. Paul United Church of Christ in Columbia named Rev. E. Eugene Smith Administrative Pastor after a June 4 congregational meeting. Smith, born June 16 1926 in Urbana Indiana, has served Illinois South Conference and Wood River where he pastored 13 years. He will be installed around September 1 and succeeds interim pastor William Groenaert who studies at Eden Seminary.

City Council Awards Maintenance Contracts and Approves 1967 Reports
Mayor Wilbert H. Kremmel chaired the May 1967 council meeting with Aldermen, staff, and engineers present. Minutes and May collections totaling 21 504.72 were approved. April 30 fund statements and a 500 advance to the Garbage fund were authorized. Police activity included four warning tickets and multiple parking citations amid 110 control room calls. Bids for a 1967 two ton truck were opened and awarded to Kruse Chevrolet Company for 3065.00, following a recommendation by the Sewer Committee. The annual fiscal report ending April 30 1967 was approved, Sharon Hutchings was appointed Deputy City Clerk, hydrants damaged by vehicles were repaired, and a 100th anniversary bronze plaque for City Hall was ordered for placement on the southeast corner. Bids for arterial street maintenance were reviewed with the Consulting Engineer recommending awards to Bitumix Columbia Quarry Midwest Black Top Roads and Roessler Coal Company.

Carroll Receives Six Months At Illinois Penal Farm
Victor Lee Carroll, 18, of Columbia, was sentenced to six months in the Vandalia Penal Farm and three years on probation after pleading not guilty to driving without a license, no vehicle registration, and carrying a concealed weapon in a motor vehicle.
