opening night drew a huge crowd under ideal weather as a large entry of exemplary horses competed for prizes. Spectators praised brilliant horsemanship and the display of elegant gowns in the boxes while music amplified the show’s glamour though pacing between acts was uneven.
Superintendent John P. Graham reports higher county wide school attendance, with Cullocks and McDowell posting record enrollments and Columbia schools showing renewed pride. The high school enrollment rose to eighty five, and the annual county trustee report cites total receipts around $184,000 with a large school fund balance, while the county faces need to borrow to cover four months of obligations as current revenues lag.
The Blue Grass Phosphate Company plans a six thousand ton export rock shipment by October 1. About 250 cars will be needed over the next two weeks at multiple sidings. The rock is on hand in excellent condition and may fetch around forty to fifty thousand dollars. The firm operates washing and drying plants to keep workers busy.
Frank Lander, longtime publisher and editor of the Columbia Herald, has become general manager of The Nashville Tennessean, succeeding H. M. Suter who moves to Broadway Magazine. Lander is praised for ability and nerve. Suter leaves with a strong reputation.
Miss Carpenter's travels and studies abroad will make the Travel Class a valuable addition to the Institute curriculum for the coming year. The class aims to teach about distant places and cultures, with history, literature, and art presented engagingly. An extra class for ladies and a public Story Hour for the Intermediate Department are planned, combining history and geography with picture studies and legends. Dr. Thomas' Eclectric relieves pain instantly and cures wounds.
The second day of the Maury county fair drew larger crowds with the grand stand near full and arena attractions drawing thousands. Spectators praised Kennedy's Wild West Show and the free arena exhibition, while races and arena rings awarded prizes for best mares, horses, and mule teams. A notable floral display by Vaughn Manufacturing Co featured wallpaper and woodwork in the floral hall.

Springfield and western sections see homes flooded to porches. streetcar service halted. merchants block doors with dams amid rising waters.
A blaze at noon at the Imperial Japanese Palace midway attraction owned by Wm Barker burned a 40 foot canvas hole, destroying a moving picture tent and a damaged trip. Fire was caused by an exposed wire. insurance covered repairs and the show resumed.
Thomas B. Watson, Populist presidential candidate, spoke to an overflow crowd in Quitman. He charged Bryan with surrendering Democratic principles, urged a Hamiltonian program, and warned that Bryan's Negro vote strategy endangers the South.
Best Southdown ram and ewe prizes awarded to T. M. Hinkle with certificates to A. B. Harlan. Best Southdown buck and other categories also went to Hinkle, with multiple premiums and certificates to A. B. Harlan and R. W. Dobbins. Awards cover two-year-old ewes, one-year-olds, and bucks across ages and breeds.
