Bryan and Johnson exchange compliments before the state committee as Hughes the man referenced Roosevelt amid party discussions.
President Roosevelt urged renomination of Charles E. Hughes for Governor but declined to dictate convention actions. He told William L. Ward and others he would express his view while allowing party leaders to decide. Silas McBee later spoke for the President. In Minnesota, Gov. Johnson and Bryan praised each other as Bryan prepared to campaign with Northwestern support.
Colum bia and Maury county show potential for gensing as a lucrative crop. Squire H F P Fariss sold gensing raised on South Main Street Belk Butler & Co New York paid $6.10 a pound and $123 for some product. Estimated per acre return at this rate exceeds $3,380, with past years yielding about $1,000 from dry roots.
At Tuesday night’s City Board of Education meeting Miss Margaret Bishop resigned from her position as assistant teacher but no replacement was elected. In the colored school Queeney Moore was elected to a vacancy created by a resignation, and two substitute teachers were elected.
Mr and Mrs John Jett and two children of Culleeoka escaped serious injury in a runaway Saturday night returning from a Culleeoka meeting. Their horse bolted near the railroad crossing, overturning the buggy. The occupants were dragged until the horse was stopped. One child slept unmoved in the buggy’s bottom.
Sunday morning September 6 Mrs Hock ensmith will preach the first annual Labor Day sermon at the C P Tabernacle South Main street. Special music and the laboring people of the town are cordially invited to attend.
Milwaukee August 31. The engagement of Miss Helen Berger daughter of Alex Berger a prominent miler and board of traders to William Jennings Bryan Jr son of the Democratic presidential candidate was announced by Mr Berger. Miss Berger and her mother are visiting in Lincoln Neb. The wedding may not occur for about a year or longer.
State presents further rebuttal in Granbery murder trial with two alienists cross examined. Mrs Granbery and child reported in distress after return from St Louis. Witnesses describe defendant’s motive and mental state while defense notes prior incidents and financial strain.
The Nashville Interurban Railway progresses toward a two month opening for electric cars from Nashville to Franklin. Roadbed nearly finished past the Franklin pike. steel, poles, and rolling stock contracted, bridges in place, and track construction to begin within two weeks. Delays from a revised connection with the Tennessee Central are resolved, enabling material delivery and grading to finish soon.
Visit by William Jennings Bryan draws Gov John Burke and other Democrats in Fargo North Dakota. Crowds cheer as Bryan attends breakfast at Hotel Metropole and a noon banquet at the Fair Grounds. He campaigns on campaign finance transparency directSenate election tariff and lumber duties with emphasis on banking deposits guaranties and anti trust measures.
W. Y. C. Grant and Felix Wood traveled to Nashville on Wednesday to meet Mr. Wheeler about a proposed underpass at Cemetery avenue crossing. They carried a petition from Columbia and Maury County residents and report surveying is underway with expectation of immediate construction.
H Davis of Glendale sold his 101 acre farm to C C Denton for 4400 dollars. J W Jewell sold his house and joint Riverside to Amanda Beckett for 3000 dollars. J and 8 C Thomas sold the south half of their farm south of town to M V Kittrell for 6600 dollars. Sales conducted by Thomas Huckaby.
John W. Mayfield and T N Flannagin, Lewis County stockmen, were arraigned before Eug Guest on charges of violating cattle quarantine laws. Arrests followed orders by the Maury County Board of Health. They had moved cattle from Lewis to Maury lands to better pastures, not to sell, and were released on court costs after magistrate and Judge Gordon's guidance.
