Witnesses recount a fatal shooting in a scene linked to a large gathering. The rapid progress in disposing of an interest and deplorable case attendance contrasts with the early hearing day crowds.
Anthony Davis, a black non union miner, was fatally shot after his Pratt City home was dynamited. He had claimed to recognize the men involved as strike tensions rise in the district. Governor Comer weighs troop action amid warnings of further trouble.
A tent revival led by Rev. Sam McGowan of Leiper's Creek and Rev. Mackey Brown of Beersherba Springs near Fly's Store concluded after ten days. More than forty converts joined in the Pentecostal mission with headquarters in Nashville as attendees from across the region gathered for services and a communal dinner.
The will of the late W T Owen was admitted to probate in the district court. All property, real and personal, is left to his wife Mrs Motha Owen with the estate to be divided among the heirs after her death. Mrs Owen is named executrix of the will.
The courtroom fills with sorrow as Mrs. Hugh Foster and Mrs. Agnes Kittrell attend the trial of Harry Granberg for first degree murder in the June 1908 killing of 19 year old Washington Long. Malcolm Long testifies about the scene and timing, noting an automatic pistol and pool hall layout as witnesses describe the incident.
The Columbia Canning Company, an emergent local industry, employs about 125 workers and pays around $700 weekly. This year it will can and ship about thirty cars of tomatoes, totaling over 350000 cans, with high quality commanding top Southern prices.
The county fair opens with a children s parade and tableau supervised by Miss Cora Lae Jacobs. About fifty to seventy youths will march as characters from Mary Jane and Tige to Teddy Bear, with prizes for best costumes. Additional participants are welcome at the Maury County Park offices.
Nashville lawyer John W. Clifton has been elected vice chairman of the national electroau of Bryan clubs and will work with the Democratic National Campaign Committee in Chicago. Clifton is noted as a rising Tennessee Democrat with strong Nashville ties and wide acquaintance. A telegram from National Chairman Norman Mack summoned him to Chicago, with confirmation arriving last night.
William J. Bryan alters campaign plan due to demand in key states. He will still speak in Nashville Memphis Knoxville and Chattanooga the month before the election, per National Democratic Committeeman Mountcastle.
R B Reeves, long-time resident who moved to Texas, visits Maury County and reports Texas and Oklahoma crops need rain but have improved. He notes farmers rely heavily on Maury County seed Irish potatoes, with hundreds of carloads shipped to Dallas and distributed to potato regions. Demand grows yearly as growers favor Maury County stock.
A large audience at the Athenaeum heard Prof. P. P. Claxton and other leaders from Tennessee make forceful pleas for school reform. They argued for efficient use of funds, highlighted state gains in six years, and contrasted Tennessee’s spending with other states while stressing education as a core public investment.
Maury County Fair box locations will be set by the association on Saturday September 5 with renewed boxes ready. On Monday September 7 the fair will be boosted with patriotic promotion and badge wearing. Lady Patronesses of the fair meet at Bethell House to finalize the women’s department program.
A large audience attended Sunday night union services at the First Baptist church. Dr George H. Mack of the First Cumberland Presbyterian church preached on Remember Jesus Christ with fine music led by Mrs. Kelly at the organ and solos by the Misses Bider. The series may end next Sunday at the First Presbyterian church or possibly continue a bit longer.
Howard Institute at Mt Pleasant opened on Tuesday with full attendance and promising prospects for a prosperous year. The teaching corps is notably strong led by Prof J A Bostick with W J Howard Miss Réigenia Gray Mira Wells and Jessie Bostick. Misses Warnock and others will handle music and expression classes.
