Manchester Tenn May 12 The circuit court here adjourned after a week of hearings on bootleggers and plotol toters. Several defendants received heavy fines and six eight and twelve month sentences to work the county roads. Judge Higgins pressed for harsher penalties to break up the illegal activity.

At the LaFayette Chapter meeting J Henry Thompson Chas H Johnson and A West were exalted to the August degree. A member Francis M Vaughn raised to Master Mason decades ago in Columbia Lodge attended. A “salutary lesson” was administered to Tom Booker colored by several citizens for insulting a householder’s wife. The group settled on a thorough whipping and his departure from the state. Booker left immediately amidst strong local sentiment and the episode was framed as a warning to others.
