Ed Callahan chief lieutenant of Judge Harris in the Breathitt feudal wars died from a knife wound at his Long Creek store. His brother-in-law John Spicer fatally stabbed him after a dispute over partnership. Callahan son Wilson shot Spicer as he attacked. The attack followed a history connecting to a 1911 murder linked to James B. Mareim. Jackson Kentucky. May 4.

Fire Destroys Barn and Crib on Nashville Pike
A barn and a crib owned by Dr H Maverum on the Nashville pike were destroyed by fire Saturday night around 9. The origin is unknown. Dr Mangrum saved his stock. Insurance of 175 dollars was placed with Hendley Frierson Cochran.

Melville Akin Dies Suddenly at 59 in Melville County
Melville C. Akin, a leading county farmer, died Monday evening after rheumatic pains. He collapsed at the Dobbins & Ewing store shortly after 5 PM while conversing with R. C. Ewing. Funeral held Tuesday at 2:30 PM at First Methodist, burial at Rowe Hill. survived by wife Pattie Ballanfant and three sons and three daughters. He had recently lived in Columbia after selling phosphate rock rights on his farm east of town.

Night Riders Use Big Whip in Kentucky Warning
In Augusta Kentucky at midnight thirty five masked men raided the home of Henry Gross near Gertrude three miles from Augusta. They beat him with a blacksnake whip and ordered him to tear up his tobacco beds and sign up his 1907 crop while quitting anti Burley Tobacco Society talk before next Saturday night. They then visited his father George Gross to deliver the same warning and Henry pledged to destroy his plant beds and drop the 1908 crop. The men cited his remark that a man has to do two things lie and pay taxes and he would choose his own pleasure about raising tobacco this year.

Spirited fight in convention over state committee chair
In Columbus May 5 the Johnson and Garber Finley factions clashed at district meetings to pick members of the State Central Committee and prep for tonight's Democratic State Convention. Will King Ends His Own Life in Mt Joy Neighborhood
An unmarried 37 year old man in Mt Pleasant County shot himself at home during breakfast. He spoke to a brother minutes before and then died by a shot entering under the chin with a stick of stove wood nearby used to touch the trigger. Survived by parents, a brother and sister at home, and five siblings elsewhere. The King family, highly respected in the Mt Joy area, mourns the tragedy which shocked the community.

Revenue report shows rising tobacco and snuff receipts
Nashville May 5 A report from the internal revenue office shows April taxes paid on 442,225 pounds of snuff and 887,562 pounds of tobacco with total local receipts of 185,872.17 dollars. Reports from Maury County sections say the wheat crop promises a record yield with the crop well advanced and knee high or more in many areas. Weather has been favorable, with little fruit damage, though last week’s cold harmed young corn and cutworms may require replanting. Alleged Night Riders Capture Six In May Raid Case
In Princeton Kentucky on May 5 Sheriff Lamb and Deputy Brown headed out with six undercover soldiers to arrest parties tied to the Crittenden county raid. They captured thirteen suspects including B Malone Dick Pool John Turner Will Tandy Rodger Tansy James Tandy Roy Merrick Ott Brown and others. The raid followed a tobacco warehouse fire at Alt Cardens and a whipping at Dycusburg. The first named suspects are charged in the Hollo wel l case.
Taft Forces Easy Winners at Kentucky Conventions
Taft forces won six Republican district conventions in Louisville on May 5 and secured instructions for Taft at the National Convention.
