Carmack Wins Gallatin Parade Boost for Governor Bid
Sumner County native Edward W. Carmack drew the largest welcome of the campaign in Gallatin with a parade and reception that eclipsed Patterson’s efforts. Carmack defended his temperance record, attacking saloon power while emphasizing his anti whisky stance. The crowd, estimated around 500, featured banners, flowers, and a 45-woman Howard Female College float as supporters credited Carmack with leading in a decisive Sumner County showing.

New York Herald predicts Bryan nomination momentum
The New York Herald forecasts William J. Bryan will win a large share of delegates with about 676 votes on the first ballot. It notes 210 pledged delegates already for Bryan, two reallocated for Bryan, 38 unpledged likely opposed to McKinley, and 166 delegates to Bryan among those to be chosen. New York should provide 781 delegates for Bryan due to local peace with McCarren. The Bryan column places Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia with Bryan as the expected momentum builds against instructions.
