Colfax moves closer to opening as the Planning Commission approves a conditional use permit for a hotel in the commercial district. The project now goes to the City Council, with 50 conditions and two lot line adjustments to gain final approval. An offsite parking agreement remains a hurdle.
Colfax marked Founder's Day with a daylong event on N Main Street celebrating the town's railroad heritage. The program included a Lyrical Locos musical presentation, a Boy Scout flag ceremony, a plaque dedication for Morris Lobner and the 1880 Freight Depot owners Gary and Pene Todd, and a Kneeland Lobner family tree planting. County Supervisor Rex Bloomfield attended and praised the historical society's work preserving Colfax's charm against progress.
Governor Schwarzenegger travels through Colfax en route to sign Assembly Bill 2600 creating the Sierra Nevada Conservancy. The agency would coordinate conservation, fund grants, protect sensitive areas, and boost recreation and tourism, empowering local communities to set priorities.
The Camptonville Academy Resource Center starts in Colfax at 225 S Railroad Ave in the Fruit Exchange building as a publicly funded charter school. CORE aims to tailor curricula to each student with weekly teacher meetings, a 25 to 1 student-teacher ratio, and about 200 students enrolled across eight teachers.
Caltrans plans a three year project closing I-80 offramp segments between Auburn Ravine Road and Colfax. Work includes resurfacing, shoulder widening, bridge deck rehab, new guardrails, higher concrete median, and an extinguishable message sign at the eastbound Applegate offramp. Weather dictates phases and times of day.
Colfax High School held its Hall of Fame ceremony on September 11 in the new auditorium with about seventy attendees. Superintendent Bart O'Brien praised the event and noted personal connections with inductees Julianne Balmain and Barbara Longnecker Propes as a highlight.
