Colfax's Growth Outpaced by Topography and Finance

First wheels arrive at Colfax area Yankee Jim's Road
Colfax history notes Thomas Farthing brought winter provisions tools and clothing to Yankee Jim's in fall 1850 as the first wagon to reach the mining town. The route 12.2 miles from Canyon Way to Foresthill still follows the old roadbed though Yankee Jim's is long gone. Grave markers hint at the community's former location and the drive offers views of waterfalls and the North Fork of the American River.
