A quick Saturday storm pelted Colfax with two inches of hail and icy surfaces along Interstate 80. The 20 minute event caused accidents and cars to slide into ditches while several participants in a city hall planning session hurried to their vehicles. No major damage was reported though travel disruptions occurred.
In the foothills rising housing costs shrink the number of school age children despite population growth. Kris Campbell of Placer Union High School District notes young families relocate to Roseville and Rocklin while retirees fill the market. Colfax meanwhile continues enrollment gains, and other Foothill schools report declines, per Colfax Elementary’s Rob.
Colfax residents city staff and volunteers met at city hall to craft a five point priority for council action. Top concern is upgrading the wastewater treatment plant followed by improving appearance funding codifying planning documents and completing an environmental impact report. turnout exceeded expectations with 46 attendees, and organizers noted limited funding shaping the agenda.
Mothers and family members in Auburn form Operation MOM to support service members in Iraq. Alta resident Bobbi Park leads the group which aims to compile a local list of troops, send care packages and collect donations while balancing concerns over war. Many attendees have sons or daughters in the military, including Colfax High graduates and Placer County deputies with relatives serving abroad.
Dan Luc, Colfax's finance director, recalls his family’s upheaval from a Vietnamese town near Saigon to the United States. At 13 in 1975, as the Vietnam War intensified, Luc moved to Saigon before his father learned of a potential U S relocation through a distant aunt.
