Comet Machholz Sighted Near Colfax by Don Machholz
Colfax resident Don Machholz discovered a new comet on August 27 2004 designated C2004 Q2 Machholz. The comet appears as a light smudge with a short tail and will brighten over the coming weeks. Machholz identified the object during a systematic sky sweep using his six inch telescope from his Colfax home. The discovery was confirmed by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory the same day.

Colfax High Senior Donovan Dolezal Dies in Thanksgiving Crash
Colfax High School senior Donovan Allan Dolezal died in a solo vehicle crash on Kearsarge Mill Road in Alta late Wednesday afternoon November 24. Neighbor Scott Decesare found the overturned Toyota pickup after Dolezal left the road. he would have turned 18 on December 27. Dolezal, who moved to Alta from the Bay Area at age six, loved nature and snowboarding and shared a close bond with family over the foothill community.

Weimar Hills robotics team wins second at Sacramento Local FLL
Weimar Hills School robotics club earned a second place at the Sacramento Local FLL Competition on November 20. The Evilish Kind of People and Oompa Loompas teams designed a logo powered robot to complete nine missions in two and a half minutes aiding a handicapped person. Coach Dave Parker praised the students for teamwork and independent problem solving.
