Marines Honor Fallen Fighters With Cross-Country Monument Run

Cpl Orlando Pena salutes as three flatbed trucks deliver a black granite monument to the Fighting Fifth at Camp Pendleton. The memorial honors 2706 Marines Navy corpsmen and a chaplain from the 5th Marine Regiment killed in Vietnam with a six-panel inscription surrounding a 14 foot spire. Patriot Guard riders join the cross country procession from Vermont to California.

Laguna Beach rescue center seeks big water use cut

Pacific Marine Mammal Center has rescued 16 elephant seals along the Orange County coast since March 5, a spike that may surpass last year’s 53. The center uses seven pools and five million gallons of water yearly, costing about seventy thousand dollars, with an upgrade planned to cut usage by about 90 percent.
