Hereford and Angus Show Draws Grand and Reserve Winners

Whitney exhibitors Michell Allen and Barbara A Lees showcased Hereford steers to Grand Champion and Reserve Champion, with Allen also winning Grand Champion Steer. The Junior Steer Show featured Angus, Shorthorn, Hereford, and Santa Gertrudis classes with multiple firsts and top placements across Owens, Cranfills Gap, McGregor, LaVega, and Gatesville exhibitors.

A Wa t based crew prepared to haul a boat when a tornadic wind flipped it and damaged a nearby area. One man held a boat line while another moved toward a car. They used a jeep and ropes to right the cabin cruiser as debris struck surrounding trees and structures.

Top Winners Told In Three Rodeos

Rodeos staged at Clifton Horse Show during the 1965 Central Texas Fair and Rodeo drew crowds. Calf roping saw Buttons Howard win with a time of 11.3 seconds while Nelda Patton and Noel Sanders tied for first with 17.2 and 17.1 seconds respectively. Bull riding honors went to Jerry Guinn, double mugging to John Burroughs, rareback riding to Sam Roberts, and steer wrestling to Rob Jerkins with a 25 second run.

Clifton School Taxes Rise to Maximum Rate

Tax notices mailed October 1 will show Clifton Independent School District rate increasing from 1.45 to 1.50 per 100 valuation. The board voted to max out the tax to support higher teacher salaries and rising operating costs. Bond funds were used in 1959 to build the junior high addition and in 1961 for the Band Hall.

Clifton City Council Eyes Landing Strip Near Oswald Property

James Wright of the Clifton Jaycee committee reports Clifton has an option to purchase a 400 by 2500 foot landing strip on the east side of S. M Oswald’s place, about three miles northeast of Clifton. The city seeks Texas Aeronautics Commission aid for the project and hopes for a decision in two to three weeks.

La Verne Matula of Abbott won senior premier honors and Brenda Poston of Mosheim won junior premier honors at the Central Texas Fair and Rodeo Dress Revue held at the National Guard Armory in Clifton. Forty garments were modeled by junior and senior 4 H members from Bosque Coryell and nearby counties with ribbons awarded by Mrs. Raymond Lammert.

Amundson, T. A., 78, Dies in Dallas Hospital

Tarvel A. Amundson of Smithfield died September 20 at 3:00 PM in Veterans Administration Hospital Dallas. He leaves son Albert of Fort Worth daughter Mrs Dorothy Green of Smithfield three grandsons four brothers Adolph Belvin Jake Carl and sister Alma. His wife Bertha Schow died November 14, 1964. Funeral services were held September 22 at Smithfield with Gause Ware Funeral Home in charge. Interment Birdville Cemetery Smithfield.
