Ward honored as Texas Senate President Pro Tempore

State Senator J P Ward of District 12 received the President Pro Tempore honor in the Texas Senate on August 26 for the interim period. A Sept 20 open house in Austin precedes a banquet as Ward is set to be Governor for a Day while the governor and lieutenant governor are out of state. Ward, 40, based in Meridian with offices in Clifton, has served since 1963 and was Bosque County judge 1959–1962.

Radio Station KCLW to Broadcast From Clifton

John Ashley of Radio Station KCLW announces a Clifton broadcast studio in the former Kuykendall Land and Cattle Co. space on West 3rd. The station will air one hour daily starting September 10, with plans to later expand. Ashley, manager of the Gatesville studios, will also manage Clifton, and Mrs. W. L. Gauntt of Clifton will join the Clifton studio. Transmitter remains in Hamilton.

Clifton Independent School District reports 721 students enrolled as of the second day of classes, matching last year’s total. Six grades show declines and six show gains. junior high grades 7 and 8 combined up by 1 and a half of a student, while sophomores lead with 81 pupils and seniors total 44.

Lineman Stranded on Pole as CPS Boom Truck Burns

Doyle Hulme, a CPS lineman, escaped injury after a gas line sparked a fire on a CPS boom truck at Clifton Cub field. He remained atop a 50 foot light pole for minutes as firefighters and CPS crews arranged a rescue.

Central Texas Fair Awards $1 986 70 in Prizes at Clifton

More than 800 entries across livestock and home economics and dress revue earned exhibitors $1 986 70 in prize money plus ribbons at the 3 day Central Texas Fair Aug 28 30 in Clifton Competitors came from Bosque Hamilton Hill Coryell McLennan and Johnson counties under 4 H FHA and FFA programs The fair notes some livestock results and photos will appear next week The parade awarded first prize 15 00 to Clifton FFA FHA for their float with Clifton VEW Auxiliary taking second and Bosque County 4 H third The Clifton School Band performed the lone local tune and grand champions in steer heifer and dairy livestock were honored during the rodeo Saturday night

Promotions for Clifton DPS Officers Signal Transfers

James Wright and Harvey Lane will leave Clifton as promotions change assignments within the Texas Department of Public Safety. Wright transfers to the Waco Texas Rangers, living in Waco and potentially collaborating with local officers. Lane becomes Highway Patrol Sergeant and will move to the Houston area. Wright, born in Hamilton County, has 12 and a half years of DPS service, ten and a half in Bosque County, and two in Marlin. He and wife Laura have two sons, Bill and Jimmy.
