The writer shares a personal update that a gall bladder removal operation is planned for tomorrow. He expects to be in the hospital about a week and thanks friends and colleagues for their support during illness and recovery.
The West Shore Volunteer Fire Dept will hold a fish fry at Laguna Park near the Fire Station on Shore Acres Drive starting at 5 30 p m Saturday September 4. The event raises funds for firefighting equipment and is open to all with admission by free will donation.
Clifton Civic Improvement Society keeps the turkey dinner menu unchanged for the Central Texas Fair. The 1 a.m. City Hall dining service serves baked turkey and dressing green beans parsleyed potatoes fruit salad cranberries pickles homemade bread meringue pie and iced tea or coffee. Adults pay $2.00 and preschoolers $1.00 with Civic members contributing 50 cents to eat. Net proceeds support civic improvement projects.
Next Monday September 6 is a recognized legal holiday. Most Clifton offices and stores including the bank Post Office city hall courthouse and other local state and federal offices will be closed. A few businesses will stay open to serve holiday traffic.
The Clifton Record will require wedding and engagement photos to be high contrast glossy black and white and exactly three by three and a half inches wide, starting with the Sept. 9 1971 edition. Polaroid and portrait tone photos will no longer be accepted.
Clifton Housing Authority commissioners and architect George Christiansen opened five bids for 32 low rent units on Aug 26. All bids exceeded the $392,000 HUD allotment, with the low bid at 456,000 from B F W Construction Co. If HUD won’t approve the excess, CHA may reject bids and re-bid.
Clifton golfer B. P. Holt made a 133 yard ace on the new Bosque Valley Club course between Clifton and Meridian. Holt, with 32 years of play, said it was his first hole-in-one and a thrilling moment on the number 9 hole.
A downtown Clifton parade begins at 6 p.m. Thursday to kickoff the 40th annual Central Texas Fair and 21st annual rodeo. Lions Club sponsors the parade while the Chamber of Commerce adds new events for this three day festival.
Entries from eight counties for Clifton fair approach record totals with 907 exhibitor entries. Livestock shows rise while Home Economics drop slightly, with bands parade prizes and carnival plans fueling expectations for a strong fair week.
One person, Donnie Lee Patterson 21 of Valley Mus, died at 10 p.m. Saturday after a two‑car crash at FM 2602 and State Highway 6, south of Clifton. Clinton Michael Medley 4 of Bryan was hospitalized with facial lacerations and internal injuries. A separate Friday crash on FM 219 west of Clifton injured L Gauntt 52 and Frank L McCafferty 48 and a passenger. all treated at Goodall-Witcher Hospital.
Water colorist Bud Biggs will give a two day painting demonstration at the Bosque County Museum on September 5 and 6. He will depict the historic Old Mill once a Bosque River landmark and later present a one man show of Central Texas landscapes.
