A reader recounts following Soil Conservation Service guidance to leave six inches of top growth on coastal bermuda and nearby grasses to promote a strong spring root system. He jokes about neighbors and wife while praising the advice and noting dandelions and sunflowers barely exceed six inches.
Burglars hit E. S. Grelle Mobil warehouse at Clifton Sunday night stealing an adding machine and 16 tires worth over 500 dollars. On Monday night Byford Machine Tool plant between Valley Mills and Clifton was broken into with acetylene tanks and tools worth several hundred dollars taken. Sheriff John Baxter said both cases are under investigation with several leads.
The Goodall-Witcher Hospital Auxiliary met Sept 23 at the home of Mrs. Bob Lane with 21 members and six guests. President Mrs. Leslie B. Vance led the business session after refreshments, featuring a talk by a past president of the Texas Association of Hospital Auxiliaries on volunteer traits and fundraising ideas. Four new members were welcomed: Mrs. Cleon Flanagan, Mrs. Jim Shields, Mrs. A. M. Tibbs, and Mrs. Angus McNeill. The next meeting is Oct 6 at Clifton City Hall.
The World War I Veterans Bar rack No. 1887 in Clifton and the Ladies Auxiliary will meet at 6 30 p.m. Tuesday Oct 7 in the home of Mrs Irene Tibbs in Valley Mills A covered dish supper will precede the business sessions.
Clyde Henry of Bosque County announces the 1970 census of agriculture will be conducted entirely by mail with no census takers. In January every farm or ranch operator will receive a form to complete and mail back, with confidentiality guaranteed.
The Clifton Band Parents Association met September 22 at the Band Hall with 24 members. A fund was approved to purchase 75 to 80 new uniforms via a Band Wagon concession at football games. Concession committee members were named and a band rules handbook and constitutional amendments were noted for November. The next meeting is November 17 at 7 30 p.m. at the Band Hall. Current officers are President Paul Barnett, Secretary-Treasurer Mrs. Edwin Conrad, and Vice-President James W Smith.
Clifton's junior high B-Squad Cubs travel to China Spring to face a strong McLennan County opponent in a 7:15 p.m. start. The team finishes away games after this road test before a home stretch beginning Oct. 6 against Whitney Junior Wildcats.
Clifton hosts Hamilton in a Friday night game with Hamilton holding a 2-1 record while Clifton stands 1-1-1. Hamilton fans seek a turnaround year as Clifton’s Cubs eye victory after a 2-0 start, with key lineups and a Texas Wishbone offense noted.
A three page letter from Congressman W. R. Poage and accompanying information were received by The Record Wednesday morning in response to the paper’s editorial last week. Printing was not possible for this week but readers should watch for the material next week.
Clifton High Cubs routed Groesbeck Goats 13 to 0 on Friday night in Clifton. The win, first of the year, featured a strong all around effort with 248 rushing yards, 13 first downs, and 16 Cubs in on tackles led by Aars and Wiede. The Goats were held to 82 rushing yards and five fumbles, while Clifton showed improved blocking and a stout defense.
