Cotton Price Support Rates For 1970 Announced By USDA

The U S Department of Agriculture on October 31 announced 1970 upland cotton price support loan and payment rates. The national average price for 1 inch cotton at average location is 20.25 cents per pound. The price-support loan rate matches 1969 at Middling 1 inch. The payment rate to cooperators is 16.80 cents per pound, added to the loan to provide at least 65 percent parity on cotton produced within the permitted acreage. The 1970 rate compared with 14.73 cents for 1969. A mail referendum set for December 15 will determine marketing quotas. two thirds support is required. If two-thirds vote no, only price support at 50 percent parity remains for growers within allotments. The loan rate aims to reflect 90 percent of the estimated world price for 1970-71. One price cotton is maintained for domestic and export channels.
