Convict Shoemake plotted mutilation under prison rule
A Harlem Prison inmate named William Shoemake 19 conspired with two other convicts to sever a fellow inmate’s foot for $5. The plan, carried out with an axe at the brick plant, left Shoemake in hospital and led to charges being pressed against Watson 17 and Wynne 21. Capt. Owens reported the case as part of a wave of recent mutilations at Harlem, attributed to youth rebellion and disciplinary measures.
