Absentee voting urged as Bosque County heads to runoff

Bosque County residents urged to vote absentee from today through May 28 for the June 1 runoff between Preston Smith and Don Yarborough. Clerk Jim mie Gill reports 12 absentee applications mailed with little turn in on the first day.

Clifton High School set for final week and graduation

Fifty three seniors of the Clifton High School 1968 class begin final week with Baccalaureate services Sunday at 8 p.m. in Bettis Auditorium. Commencement is Wednesday at 8 p.m. with Baylor University professor Dr. John B. Davidson as speaker. Valedictorian Carol Bennett and salutatorian Vicky Outlaw are named among top scholars, along with high-point student Bill Carpenter and five others scoring above 90.

Public Invited to Cancer Society Meet May 28

The Bosque County Unit of the American Cancer Society invites the public to its annual meeting on Tuesday night May 28 at 7 30 at Zion United Church of Christ in Womack. Guest speaker Dr Lawrence Canning of Waco will discuss chemotherapy.

Businesses to Close on Memorial Day May 30th

Next Thursday May 30 Memorial Day will be observed in Clifton. The Farmers State Bank Post Office and other governmental offices will be closed and most retail businesses will also shut for the holiday.

Cubs to Meet Frisco 9 in Regional Saturday

Clifton Cubs varsity chase a regional crown as they face Frisco Coons in Rockwood Park Fort Worth after last year’s 8-5 loss. Frisco earned regional berth by shutting out Italy 7-0 while Clifton beat Milsap 5-0 to clinch bi district. Anz undefeated pitcher leads Cubs with 6-0 record. Braune and Ledlow spark offense as fans plan to reach Rockwood Park via University Drive.

Cub Scouts Award Winners Highlight Pack Meet

Clifton Cub Scouts honored Den 1 Den 2 Den 3 and Den 4 along with Webelos for Wolf Badges Gold Arrow Points Silver Arrow Points and service stars at a May 20 Pack meeting. Den 3 received theater admission and Webelos colors were awarded as Stephen L san retired to Webelos. A June 16 hike and picnic at Meridian State Park was planned.

Turnersville School to be Discontinued Over Enrollment

The Turnersville eight grade school will close due to declining enrollment. Coryell County plans annexation of the district into three nearby districts Gatesville Jonesboro and Clifton with portions also possibly joining Crawfills Gap. A special hearing was held and details emerged in Gatesville.

Capt. Tom Ralph Killed in Vietnam Action

Word from Clifton reports Marine Captain Tom Ralph Jr. was killed in Vietnam on Friday May 17. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. T H Ralph Sr. Burial details were pending at press time and to be announced when available.

Clifton District 14 convention draws 161 veterans

A Clifton gathering hosted 161 VFW and Auxiliary members from 21 of 23 Central Texas Posts in District 14. State Senator J. P. Word spoke on world wide breakdown of law and order and the need to uphold the law to protect liberty and property.

Muddy Friday night performance highlights include 165 contestants at the Bosque County 4-H Riding Club event held May 17 18 in Meridian arena. High point goes to Mary Lou Cremeans Glen Rose as she places in poles and barrels. notable acts include Pat Zook Belton riding bulls and bareback breezes.
