Many events underway in Clifton area this weekend

Clifton will host about 150 Veterans of Foreign Wars and their spouses from District 14 this Saturday and Sunday. The Civic Improvement Society runs an essay contest inviting participation from youths and adults to shape Clifton's future. Local fishing highlights include large catches at Lake Whitney and King Creek with locals like Al Zaremba from Laguna Park showcasing Bayonet lures.

Local VFW to Host District Convention in Clifton

The Clifton Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary plan a joint district convention May 18 and 19 in Clifton Central Texas with about 150 veterans and auxiliary members from District 14 attending. Events include a social dance Saturday night and a Sunday program with welcome remarks by Clifton Mayor C E Pierson and a keynote by State Senator J P Ward.

Award Nite Fetes Bana Ninth Annual Clifton Band Banquet

The ninth annual Clifton High School and Jr High School Band awards banquet was held May 7 at 7 p.m. in the CHS Cafeteria. Honored guests included band members, Band Director and Mrs. Mel Cowan, School Board President and Mrs. W. F. Key, Supt. and Mrs. Kent Appleby, CHS Principal and Mrs. Walter Hansen, and Band Parents Association officers. Entertainment featured The Travellers from Baylor University, Burnie Bass, David Bass, and Steve Vaughn, who also attended as banquet guests. Jack Hill served as Master of Ceremonies and recognized 1968 Band Officers. President Harvey Zimmerman gave the invocation.

Orbeck and Carpenter Medalists at State Meet

Dale Orbeck won bronze for poetry interpretation at the Interscholastic League Contests held at the University of Texas. Bill Carpenter earned two second places and one fourth, placing fourth in state journalism. Accompanied by sponsors Mrs. E. B. Harris and Miss Lottie Bettis, they watched finals of one act plays between events.
