Clifton CROP Hunger Walk scheduled for March 26 aims to recruit 70 walkers and raise 2500 to combat hunger locally and globally. Funds raised in Clifton will support the local food bank, joining nationwide interfaith efforts under the theme Ending hunger one step at a time.
The annual Spring Clean-up along the Lake Whitney shoreline is set for Saturday April 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. led by the US Army Corps of Engineers with the Lake Whitney Civic Association. Registration at Hopewell Trail Entrance. Bring sturdy shoes gloves and lunch. boat owners urged to help. For details contact Whitney Lake Project office or email Courtney Hammond. The same Commissioners Court session enacted a 90 day burn ban due to drought and Bosque County fires.
Clifton City Council on March 8 discussed a report by City Administrator Charles McLean on year to date budget and expenses. The consent item was pulled for discussion and showed a 1.8 percent overall budget improvement after adjustments. Noted were 2010 Texas New Mexico Power street light funds not budgeted and higher year costs, plus two large invoices for water well pumps and street repaving shifted to capital expense.
Clint Tunnell of Clifton is named to the Texas Irrigation Network board. The Network promotes water conservation and quality, working with irrigators, water purveyors, regulators, landscapers, municipalities, educators, and water districts. It operates a website, issues a newsletter, and partners with EPA Water Sense to advance irrigation practices and regulations.
The Nellie Pederson Civic Library moved from the Civic Improvement Society to the City of Clifton in 2000. Civic deeded the land to the city. the arrangement persisted for over ten years. In 2010 Civic proposed city support with Civic covering extra operational costs. A five member board was created with three citizen appointees and two Civic appointees. CTLS Executive Director Pat Tuohy trained the board, praising the transition from private funding to city control and broad stakeholder involvement.
