A new organization aims to fund brush control and range improvement research in Texas by charging 1 cent per acre per year for five years. The group partners with Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and the U S Department of Agriculture, with John Matthews as chairman and local leaders to follow.

Mrs. Marie French of Waco visited her niece Mrs. Jack Joy. Moody Gee paused at Cedar Shores then continued travels. Ben Winkler of Temple and Reeves Russell of Weslaco joined Gee at the National Automotive Parts Show in Chicago and stopped in Muskeegan Michigan on route home. Karen Gee, Amer American Airlines hostess, remains grounded due to a strike. Guests included Mrs. Jean Hardee Mrs. Catherine Levingston John Hawkins and Sam Lerner. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Fulton visited Fort Worth relatives, spending the night with Mrs. Eisen. A covered dish dinner occurred March 5 at Cedar Shores Community Chapel. Rev. Leroy Bennfield from the Philippines visited March 2 at the Moore home. The cancer dressing group met March 3 with several attendees led by Mrs Moody Gee. County officials Catherine Levingston and Robert A. Wells attended a Fort Worth district meeting March 4–5 with about 35 members from 15 counties.

Spring and summer legumes reduce erosion, filter runoff, and protect water quality, while improving organic matter and nutrient retention. Planting windows and inoculation guidance are provided by the Soil Conservation Service.

Widow Accepts Gallantry Medals for Viet Nam Hero
Posthumous awards were presented at Fort Hood to 1st Lt. Robert L. Springer for gallantry in Vietnam. His widow Mrs. R. L. Springer of Waco accepted the Silver Star, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Clusters and V devices, and the Army Commendation Medal for actions in 1968. Springer, son of Mrs. Martha L. Springer of Waco and nephew of Mrs. Elmo Dansby of Clifton, moved to aid a wounded radio operator, helped a canal-pinned man, and directed fire to protect a trapped comrade during separate engagements in February and March 1968.

Soldier Receives Posthumous Bronze Star and Purple Heart
A veteran awarded a Bronze Star for ground combat in Vietnam from November 1967 to May 1968 and a Purple Heart for fatal wounds on May 5, 1968, both medals presented posthumously after intense hostile fire he faced while moving his squad to a better position.
