The Record notes that last week's grid banquet attracted over 10 percent of Clifton’s population. Photos show Varsity and B Squad with plaques and jackets, but several B Squad players were not photographed.
Nineteen early entries have been received for the 17th annual Lake Whitney Beauty Pageant to be held April 11 and 12 in Hillsboro at Doughty Hall. Contestants hail from Lake Whitney sub-divisions and nearby towns with Hillsboro sponsoring five entries and no Clifton firm yet entered. The pageant aims for 76 sponsored entries and invites all towns within 50 miles of Whitney to participate. A $25 sponsor fee covers the swimsuit, contestant sash, and sponsor credit, with entries due by April 1. Evening gowns and conservative swimsuits will be worn. no talent contest.
The Farmers State Bank in Clifton offers free city maps to anyone who asks. The handout serves residents and visitors seeking local geography.
Only hours remain before the March 6 filing deadline for April school trustee and city council elections. Six Clifton School Board candidates seek three seats. three Clifton City alderman seats see four contenders. Mayor Cris E. Pierson seeks reelection. Other races include Bosque County districts Walnut Springs Valley Mills and Crawfills Gin with multiple candidates.
The Clifton mayor urges residents to support water and sewer facilities and health services as state and national pollution laws tighten. He notes Texas rules take effect July 1 and city councils must follow mandatory sanitary standards despite limited local control.
The Clifton Independent School District Board of Trustees approved a policy to expel and withhold semester credit for students involved with possession or use of any dangerous or narcotic drug. Superintendent Kent Appleby said the rule is preventive, though no local cases exist, citing guidance from Attorney General Crawford Martin to the Education Commissioner J W Edgar.
Fourteen Clifton High School students competed at the Waco High Baylor Speech Tournament in Waco on February 28 with 1600 entrants. Seven CHS performers advanced to semis in poetry interpretation dramatic poetry duet acting original oratory and extemporaneous speaking earning scholarships trophies and medals totaling more than 1500.
Clifton Lions Club plans a March 11 banquet at 7 p.m. in the First Methodist Church Fellowship Hall to mark 40 years since chartering on March 14, 1929. Past District 2X3 Governor Pat S. Whitaker will be the featured speaker, with Bill Painter hosting and a musical program directed by Patsy Ruth Lancaster.
Clifton Cubs compete in their 1969 season opener at the Cotton Ball Relays in Taylor, earning 71 points for second place. Seniors Wayne Prescher and Tommy Todd lead with multiple top finishes, including Prescher’s wins in the 100 yard dash and 440 and anchoring the Mile Relay.
Mrs Mary Herbert RN associate director of education from the Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners of Austin visited the Goodall-Witcher Foundation School of Nursing. Austin reported the program could expand to begin a new class of vocational nursing students in June with ten openings. The current six students will finish September 9. Applications are being accepted by Jim B Smith and Mrs Dan Amundson for the June 9 class.
