Lake Whitney Group Plans Beauty Contests

Members of the Lake Whitney Association held a dinner meeting at Charlie's Cafe in Clifton with about 70 attendees to set plans for the annual Lake Whitney Beauty Contests and to name contestants for the Texas Miss Universe and Lake Whitney titles. The Beachland site was accepted for the Texas Miss Universe Contest, scheduled June 10 and 11, with Lake Whitney gymnasium hosting the Lake Whitney contest events.

The 1959 poll tax filings show 2 053 payments with 21 exemptions, rising to 2 913 with 39 exemptions this year. New Laguna Park voting box adds 122 eligible voters, shifting many from Womack Roswell and Steiner. Over 600 eligible voters over age 60 are not included.

Sunset Home board approves air conditioning and merger plans

The Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home board met March 7 and approved air conditioning for Clifton Hall, with Lone Star Gas Co. to install. The merger shifts ownership to churches in the Central Conference Southern District of the AL Church, while outside congregations gain corporate member status. Tearing down west shacks was approved for storage and recreation, and board terms were updated with several new members named.

County School Census Shows Rise in Bosque County Pupils

January census figures compiled by Joe White show 2,202 school age children in Bosque County as of September 1, 1960, an increase from 2,134 a year earlier. White notes figures are preliminary and exclude inter-district transfers. Morgan leads with a 31 pupil gain, and colored students total 116 across five districts.

Death of Jack Helm Mourned in Clifton and Galveston

Funeral services were held for Jack Helm aged 60 years 5 months 22 days of Galveston who died March 7 from a heart attack while on a field trip near Dayton. Helm formerly farmed in Hale Center and worked in real estate before joining the U S Army Corps of Engineers in 1952. He was buried in Clifton Cemetery with arrangements led by J Roy Waldrum. He was a Clifton native and served in World War I.

Bosque County 4H and Clifton FFA Do Houston Show Big

Bosque County 4 H Club members and Clifton FFA boys earned about $5 000 from the Houston Fat Stock Show with sales of five fat steers two registered heifers and poultry plus prize money. Kenneth Radde won second in the Marshall Foundation Scholarship interview. Calf scrambles produced certificates for two boys and a trailer camp supported the trip.

Mrs. Schow Named Census Crew Leader in Bosque County

Mrs. Emmett H. Schow of Clifton has been named crew leader for the 1960 Census of Population and Housing in Bosque County. She will supervise 11 enumerators, undergo training in Temple and Waco, and coordinate recruitment, training, and assignment of census takers to ensure a complete count.

Mrs. Page Injured When Car Hits Train

Mrs. Mary Ruth Page 73 of Walnut Springs seriously injured when her car struck a moving Santa Fe Railway freight train at a Farm to Market Road 927 crossing near Morgan. She was taken to Clifton hospital with cuts bruises chest injuries and possible internal injuries.

Clifton buyers list Thursday prices for poultry grain cattle and hogs
