The Texas railroad commission reports 282 miles of new main line constructed in the fiscal year ending June 30 1908 bringing total state mileage to 12838. Roads adding mileage include Beaumont and Great Northern 12 miles and Stephenville North and South Texas 42 miles among others. Also noted a fatal accident near Aquilla when Mamie Nichols accidentally discharged a shotgun killing herself after stray dogs entered her yard.
Cleve land Pitts son of J G Pitts of Aquilla drowned in the Brazos river west of town. The water runs 12 to 15 feet deep and swift. A large search failed to recover the body by evening. Pitts left a wife and one young child. He was a popular young man and his death brought universal sadness to the community.
