Collision Kills Two Hearne Women
Mrs Doris Mangum Reed a 34 year old high school English teacher and her mother Mrs Oneita Johnson 56 of Hearne were killed in a two vehicle crash on State Highway 6 five miles northwest of Meridian. The loaded grain truck driven by P W Stewart of Lubbock collided head on with Reed's car. Stewart was uninjured and charged with negligent homicide. Reed died at Clifton hospital around 4 20 PM. The two women had left Hearne to visit relatives in Eastland. Reed was a UT graduate survived by Lucian Reed Carla Reed and Don Mangum. Johnson survived by her husband one son and several grandchildren.

A persistent grass fire Monday near M. E. Young pasture south of Clifton spread to B. G. Gandy land along Clifton to Lanes Chapel road. Fire threatened homes and buildings near the Young and Gandy properties before containment held. Large areas of grass brush and fences were burned with substantial monetary loss.

A freak heat wave hit Lakeside Village and Mooney Village Tuesday night causing windstorms that unroofed buildings toppled power poles and trees. Temperatures reportedly spiked to near 140 degrees with car radiators boiling and glass shattering outward at the Mooney store.
