Miss Darlene Holloway and Johnie Paul Watson of Dallas united in marriage at 8:00 PM Saturday June 4 at the First Baptist Church in Clifton. The bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs L C Holloway of 115.
The column lists multiple birth announcements from Meridian Clifton and Mosheim, detailing parents, addresses, birth dates in early June 1960, and newborn weights. In Bosque County the Second Democratic Primary produced tight shows with R W Standefer edging Rufus Hutchison by one vote 252 to 251 for County Commissioner Precinct 3. Tiny Carr won the sheriff nomination 1541 to 978 over James McDowell. McDonald led Davidson 1398 to 943 for Court of Criminal Appeals judge. Red Mantooth kept Precinct 1 Commissioner 480 to 404. Total turnout neared 2600, far below May’s 3181. ballots tabulated at Bosque County boxes follow.
Clifton Lutheran Vacation Church School began May 30 with 130 students and 25 staff. Daily sessions run 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. Attendance has declined in week two. The closing program Friday at 8:00 p.m. will display room activities and is open to all.
World War I Barracks Clifton and Auxiliary held their regular monthly meetings on Tuesday night May 31 at the American Legion Clubhouse. Nine men and twelve women attended with separate business sessions followed by a social hour. Co-hostesses were Mrs Andrew Terp and Mrs FE Ledlow who served cake mints and lemonade. Next meeting is June 28 at the Legion Clubhouse.
Jack Anz has been a patient in the local hospital this past week with an infected leg, responding to treatment. Mrs. Dan Bryan of Lake Charles Louisiana visited Clifton from Tuesday of last week to Thursday this week with her parents the G FE Jacksons and brother Morris while her husband was away on business. Mr and Mrs R E Kappler and son Gary visited Clifton week end before last to see Mrs Kappler’s mother Mrs Martin Hoel senior and brother Martin Hoel Jr and family. Mr Kappler returned home mid week. Mrs Kappler and Gary stayed until week end. Mrs Margaret Ringness traveled May 27 to May 30 to Austin visiting her daughter Miss Mary Ringness and nephew Allen Christen son with his wife and sons Allen Jr and Ronald. The Allen Christen son family visited Clifton last week end with his parents Mr and Mrs Ole J Christen son and sister Miss Oletha Christenson. The editor received a letter from Dr J W Oxford of Floresville praising the late W W Windham and noting his parents’ helpfulness to Dr Oxford in his youth. Dr Oxford is a brother of Tom Oxford of this city.
The Clifton Greens edged Valley Mills 6 to 5 in the Little League opener on Tuesday June 7 with home runs by Morris Jackson Frank Red Tyler and Dickie Larson. Jerry Allen pitched well for Clifton holding Valley Mills to one earned run. Douglas Jaynes impressed for Valley Mills as a promising pitcher.
Clifton's Green Peewees fall to McGregor Black Sox on a Wednesday in McGregor. In Clifton, Black Sox edge McGregor Red Sox 9 to 8. Earlier, Black Sox beat McGregor Blue Sox 19 to 6. Green Sox beat Red Sox 14 to 11 at home. On June 1 Clifton Green Sox lead 18 to 3 over Clifton Black Sox before late rally is erased by time limit.
Over the past weekend near Clifton, guests included Henry Hegar of Dallas, Kathryn Tackley a North Texas State College student, Wesley Smith and son Noel of Waco, Elmer Foster and Estalline Cartwright and daughter Claylene of Vaughan, staying at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. N. Foster.
Twelve regional winners compete at Beachland Cabin Camp on Lake Whitney for the Texas Miss Universe title. Finalists include Miss Abilene Carlota Sigler and Miss Lake Arlington Sue Morris, with sponsors ranging from Alpha Omicron to the Tropicana Hotel of Pasadena. The public pageant begins 8:00 p.m. Saturday, with Lake Whitney Association sending Texas to Miami Beach for the July 29 world event and prizes listed.
Children of Mr and Mrs Arnold Anz of Route 1 Clifton host an open house for their silver anniversary on Sunday June 19 from 3:00 to 6:00 PM at 107 South Avenue, Clifton, inviting friends and relatives to greet the couple.
An open house honors Mr. and Mrs. D R Phillips on their 25th wedding anniversary at 901 North 17th Street Waco from 2:00 to 6:00 PM on Saturday June 18. Mrs Hannah Hoff Brown hosts the event inviting all friends and relatives to celebrate.
Thursday morning prices from Clifton buyers show eggs at 27c a dozen for No 1s and 20c for others, cream at 40c per lb, oats 69c a bu, wheat 1.80, spring wheat 1.50, barley 83c, yellow corn 1.20. About 435 cattle offered. steers and yearlings 24–26.50, cows 16–18, bulls 16–18.50, stocker steers 23–27, cows and calves 120–215. hog tops 15.50–17.30. lamb tops 12–17.50. Next week sales: hogs and lambs 11:00, cattle 1:30.
