Soil Conservation and Residue Benefits for Soil Health
Soil residue from grain straw maize stalks and other plant growth adds organic matter and protects soil from erosion. Surface cover reduces raindrop impact and runoff, aiding water storage, improves seedbeds, and promotes better stand. Nitrogen fertilizer speeds straw decay and supports subsequent crops while increasing residue. Aim for at least 3000 pounds of litter per acre annually.
