The First Methodist Church Giants challenge the First Baptist Church Angels to a no-holds barred softball tilt at City Park Field on Saturday night August 1 at 8 o'clock. P L Ashcraft recruits for the Angels and B W Whitney has the Giants roster. Public invited, refreshments offered, free will offering requested.
A Social Security representative will be at Clifton City Hall Dining Room from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon on Tuesday August 4 1964. Disabled children who reach 18 may still qualify for benefits if they were disabled before 18 and meet other requirements.
Members and families of Womack Lodge No. 135 will hold a regular meeting on August 2, 1964 at the Lodge Hall. Barbecue supper at 11 p.m. A business meeting follows. Each member urged to attend and bring a dessert and bread for the meal.
Mr and Mrs Darrell D Reesing announce the birth of their son Phillip Scott on July 19 at Memorial Hospital Houston weighing 7% lbs. Grandparents are Herman H Reesing W W Moen of Grand Prairie and Clifton connections noted. Mr and Mrs Henry A Anz announce the birth of a son James Alta on July 22 in the local hospital weighing 9 pounds.
Clifton Blue Sox, 120 record champions of the Junior Teen-Age Square League, meet Glen Rose at 8:00 PM in Meridian for District 4 Tournament play. The event runs Aug 3–8, sponsored by Bosque County Development Corporation, with other first bracket games Monday and Tuesday and Mexia awaiting the Clifton winner Friday. Managers convene Aug 1 at 6:00 PM for rosters and birth certificates, then ice cream after field inspection. The State Junior Tournament follows Aug 10–15 at Brownwood in a double elimination format.
C E F Pierson Lions Club counselor gave a brief resume of the international convention in Toronto. He noted improved relations between Texas Lions and other regions and said Texas is preparing to run a candidate for third vice president next year, with an estimated expenditure around twenty thousand dollars.
At First Baptist Church on Wednesday July 22 an impressive candlelight ceremony marked the achievements of seven Auxiliary girls. The Junior Girls Auxiliary is sponsored by the Woman's Missionary Union. Debra Brown Deidra Cox Nancy Huffman and Linda Schwartz were named Maidens with Brenda Burns as Lady in Waiting and Peggy Hatter Linda Sparks earning two Forward Steps for Princess. The event included scripture reading by Debra Brown and remarks by G A Counselor Mrs Felix Cox.
Bosque County Farm Bureau announces two new entrants Betty Lou Reichert route 2 Valley Mills and Cynthia Harris Clifton joining Donna Aars Janet Schrantz Clifton Judy Fouts Iredell for the Queens Contest. The 1964 Bosque County Queen and Little Miss Farm Bureau contests are set for 8:00 p.m. Friday August 7 at Clifton National Guard Armory. Contestants previously listed include Sherry Conrad Barbara Helms Carol Jane Miller Julie Ann Krueger and Linda Annette Epley. The group appeared on the Clark Bolt Show KCEN TV Channel 6 Temple this week.
Albert Spitzer of Morgan will play for the East Team in the 6-Man All Star Football Game set in Ranger Friday night July 31 at 7 30. He trained with Ranger Junior College team after traveling there last Sunday. Spitzer is the Morgan school alum and son of Mr and Mrs Albert Spitzer Sr and brother of Jimmy.
David Ross Worthy infant son of Mr and Mrs Clifford Worthy of Route 4 Gatesville was born dead at Clifton hospital on Friday July 17. Survived by parents two sisters Valerie 15 Corliss 13 and brother Clifford Jr 8. Graveside service held 3 PM Saturday July 18 Turner ville Cemetery conducted by Reverend Dale Yant. Sympathy offered to the Worthy family.
Jim Willenborg of La guna Park and Clifton High School background is among 21 Texas A and M University athletes designated as distinguished students for spring 1964. The honor requires at least 15 hours with no grade below C and a 2.25 GPA on a 3.0 scale, announced by Allen E. Denton Jr., academic counselor for the university athletic department.
Miss Annie Marie Gustafson aged 81 years 7 months and 30 days of Clifton died after illness Friday night July 24. She had lived with her sister Mrs Nina Taylor at 303 North Avenue H since 1962 and funeral services were held July 28 at the Clifton Funeral Home Chapel and St Olaf Lutheran Church Cranfills Gap. Revered Erwin H. Knitt presided with hymns What a Friend We Have in Jesus and My Faith Looks Up to Thee sung by the congregation. Pallbearers included Homer Hastings and five nephews. Interment followed at St Olaf Rock Church Cemetery between Clifton and Cranfills Gap.
Regular monthly singing at Lanes Chapel Memorial Methodist Church from 2:00 to 4:00 PM on Sunday August 2 sponsored by Claud Graves of Turnersville. Everyone is invited to attend and participate in the singing event.
A fire at Kopper damaged a Bosque County school, destroying the vocational agriculture shop, the only local fire truck, and tools. Estimated loss runs 30 000 to 40 000 dollars. crews from Blum, Rio Vista, Meridian aided and saved several vehicles. The Koppers school board plans to rebuild.
Joe R Grimland of Grand Prairie earns four top awards at the Texas Professional Photographers Convention July 11–13 in Houston. He wins Best Direct Color of a Woman and Best Direct Color of a Child plus two blue ribbons for portraits White on Black and Before The Dance. His portraits are among 150 national winners displayed at the New York World's Fair.
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Giese and Mrs. Alex Anderson of this city spent July 22 to July 26 in San Antonio attending the State American Legion Convention. Mr. Giese attended Legion sessions at the Granada Hotel while the ladies joined the auxiliary meeting at the St. Anthony Hotel.
Baptist G A girls were entertained Monday July 27 at a swimming party and picnic at the Clifton Motel. Hostesses included Mrs Felix Cox and Mrs C L Burns with counselors Mrs Edward Brown. Attending were Linda Mann Rebecca Jenkins Debra Brown Deidra Cox Nancy Huffman Brenda Burns Peggy Hatter Linda Sparks Bridget Burns and Betty Brown.
Susan Kelly aged 11, granddaughter of Mrs. J. M. Jorgenson of Clifton, earned a blue ribbon in the July 4 riding parade and celebration in Dubois Wyoming. She is also niece of Mrs. Chris Strand and daughter of Robert and Mrs. Kelly.
Billy Helms son of Mr and Mrs Calvert G Helms Jimmy Conrad son of Mr and Mrs Edwin P Conrad and Mike Conrad son of Mr and Mrs Victor Conrad went to Comfort last Sunday to attend the Sons of Hermann Youth Camp there until Saturday of this week Mr Helms and Edwin P Conrad took the boys to Comfort Mr and Mrs Jimmie Sinclair and children Mark Kevin Kyle and Karla of Fort Worth were weekend visitors of his parents Mr and Mrs Jim Sinclair
Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Bevil and daughter Betty Ann of Houston arrived Tuesday July 28 and planned to stay until Friday July 31 with Mrs. Bevil's aunt Mrs. Fred Moore and relatives on Route 2 in Clifton.
Prices posted Thursday morning show eggs at 28 to 30 cents per dozen for large cage and 23 to 25 cents for medium, with pullets 15 cents. Grain lists oats 60 cents per bushel and milling wheat 1.50, barley 90 cents, milo 1.82 per cwt, yellow corn 1.25 per bushel. Approximately 1,177 cattle offered. market weak with fat calves 50 cents to $1 lower. Steers and yearlings 20 to 22, butcher calves 18 to 21.50, stocker steers 17 to 20, cows 10 to 13, cows with calves 90 to 160, hog tops 16.75 to 17.25.
