With eight weeks until the fall term begins and six weeks until Cub football team training, maintenance work is underway on school facilities to ready for the new term. The district prioritized classroom repairs and field improvements ahead of opening day.
A reader recalls an old June 22 1964 Wright newsletter detailing federal paper work probes and a seven copy destruction directive. Clifton schools plan summer repairs while warning of continued federal aid cuts amid rising costs from the Vietnam War and upcoming academic terms.
Clifton led Texas with 5.80 inches of rain recorded by the U S Weather Bureau at Clifton Funeral Home, as surrounding rural gauges reported 4 to nearly 5 inches. The rainfall boosted 1968 totals to 32.70 inches and hinted at a potential second hay crop for farmers after harvest, while others lamented unfinished baling.
The July 4 weekend produced two minor auto wrecks in Clifton and Laguna Park. In Clifton a 1960 Chevrolet pickup driven by Richard Bost of Fort Worth collided with a 1963 Chevrolet driven by Charles Mooney at Mary Street and Ave H. no injuries and about 100 dollars in damage. In Laguna Park a 1961 Dodge pickup pulling a camper driven by Mary Brookey Perry and a 1963 Chevrolet pickup camper driven by Norval Gayton Watson collided on State Highway 22 near Lake Whitney Dam. Perry suffered hip injuries but Watson’s family were unharmed.
Clifton City Council 3-2 vote to act as the Board of Equalization for a hearing on tax inequities amid plans to begin street paving. Mayor Pierson would turn chair to Jim B. Smith. Smith says few changes expected, while residents of 1500 block West 13th qualify for pilot paving. Traffic light study for W 5th and Ave D to THD pending approval.
Bosque County Farm Bureau sets regular monthly meeting at Meridian State on Tuesday 16 July at 8 p m with a watermelon supper instead of the usual meal. Sam Radde, Meridian area director, hosts the event and Calvin Rueter invites all members and friends to attend for a social gathering.
Mrs. W. T. Edgar of 701 Parkview Dallas renews The Record for the 54th time this week, marking a long standing patronage.
O C Cotton Lane Jr 44 of Meridian died on arrival at Goodall Witcher Hospital about 10 am Wednesday after collapsing at Clifton Cattle Company He was transported to the hospital by Clifton Funeral Home ambulance Funeral plans were not available at press time
City firemen answered a fire alarm Monday morning during the heaviest rainfall of the year. Residents of the Marshal Burns home on Avenue I reported smelling smoke after a lightning disruption to power but firefighters found no damage or fire.
Nine 4-H club girls competed at Cranfills Gap auditorium on July 1. Rita Blackman of Cranfills Gap named top senior. Brenda Poston named junior top scorer. Susan Jones earned hostess honors. other juniors received blue and red ribbons including Teresa Epley and Kirst Knudson.
